Important Information - Genetic Testing Process

Due to significant wait times for initial appointments with Genetic counsellors we would like to inform you about an alternative pathway for genetic testing that has been established by the Huntington’s Disease Association Auckland. This is open to anybody living in Aotearoa 18 years and over.

This private option adheres to international best practice guidelines and is available at a cost of approximately $1,000.

To initiate the process, individuals are requested to contact use, directly we will assist in completing the referral to a genetics private practice. This referral process typically involves a brief telephone consultation lasting about 10 minutes. Following this, individuals will meet with a genetic counsellor, who will then refer them back to the Huntington’s Association for a psychological screening. This screening can be completed by our Nurse Practitioner.

During the 2nd consultation with the genetic counsellor, individuals will be provided with a blood form. Once the blood sample reaches the laboratory, the DNA extraction process generally takes about six weeks. After this period, results will be communicated by a genetic counsellor, followed by a follow-up appointment six weeks post-testing with our Nurse Practitioner.

We strive to complete these 4 appointments within a three-month timeframe; however, please note that if clinicians are on annual leave, the turnaround may extend to four months. If you have any questions or would like to proceed with the referral process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly, you do not need a GP referral.

Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to assisting you.
